Well, it is amazing to me that with recent admissions that there are likely a large number of leaky building still out there and not dealt with, and with a large number of people experiencing financial difficulties in these times, the Provincial Government has decided that it is not longer necessary to provide assistance to leaky condo owners through the Home Owner Protection Office. Also nice that they have lead people to believe that they were considering injecting more funding to help things out and then they announce on a Friday afternoon that the program is dead and the deadline for any remaining applications is that very afternoon. That is fair, lead people to believe that all will be OK and then cut them off at the knees with a couple hours notice. I am usually one to understand the position of both sides in most situations, but here I have to say I find this disgusting on the part of the government.

Looks like the very office that was set up to help leaky condo owners fund the repairs to their buildings is falling victim to market forces. Seems that the funding they use comes from new home building which is down of course. So that makes sense, people that bought leaky condos that leak in part due to a poor building code, are now having trouble BORROWING the money to fix them. I guess if government can’t take some responsibility for a poor building code, why would they take any responsibility for helping the poor victims fix the problem.

Sorry to continue on the same theme, but there seems to be an endless amount of news around it right now.

Interestingly most of it coming form the Nanaimo Daily News. Anyway, in the article “It’s sick that leaky condos are still plaguing families” the point is raised that it is unacceptable that this problem has been going on for so long and still the government has not got a clear handle on it. I have to agree, but I also think we are all aware of the problem and know that it is still a large problem, so it comes back to Buyers doing the research before buying. If you were to buy a house that was poorly constructed and leaked later, there would probably not be an uproar about it.

Of course I know it is not that simple, there are people to blame, and those that should take responsibility, but this is the real world and we all know that things are often not as simple as they appear.

As well it is easy to say Buyer beware, but there area also all those that have been in the buildings since the beginning and al this is coming up now.

All in all, I am sure most agree that there is a massive problem here, and I think everyone including the government need to work together to solve it, rather than everyone trying to push all the blame ans responsibility around. Lets just come up with a plan of action and move forward.

Maybe the government should hold open forums like they did for health care, or something like that. Then a discussion that may be productive can at least be started.
